1/31/07 - The MVMCA, working with the Greater Ridgewood Youth Council, PS 153 and Councilmember Dennis Gallagher, starts an "After School Program" for 150 students.

The MVMCA brought together the expertise of the Greater Ridgewood Youth Council and special funding from Councilmember Gallagher and initiated a much needed After School Program at PS 153. The program, designed by Bob Monahan, Director of the GRYC and approved by PS 153 Principal Susan Bauer, will accommodate 150 students. The program, which will run from 3pm to 6pm, Monday through Friday, will consist of both homework assistance and recreational activities. This program is fully funded for 2 years - through the end of 2008.

The MVMCA would like to work with both the GRYC, the Maspeth Town Hall and any other youth orientated organizations to bring this type of program to other schools in our community. We will be talking with our elected officials in an attempt to secure additional funding.

1/31/07 - The MVMCA is honored and privileged to co-chair the 2007 Our Lady of Hope Endowment Fund Dinner/Dance. This fund raising event is set for Friday, May 18th, 2007. The OLH Endowment Fund for Children's Spiritual and Educational Needs will be honoring as its 2007 Man of the Year, Kenneth Rudzewiek. Additional details will soon be available.

1/31/07 - The re-building of PS 128 - At the MVMCA general membership meeting on January 23rd, the issue of the re-building of PS 128 was discussed. After a presentation by MVMCA President Joe Cimino which was followed by comments by Councilmember Gallagher, an open forum discussion was held. Upon conclusion of comments and questions by the membership present, President Cimino made a motion "to support the NYC Dept of Education and CEC District 24 plans for the K through 8 expansion at PS 128 and to attend the February 7th meeting hosted by Community Board 5 to publically express this support". A vote was taken and the motion passed with nearly all in favor, except for one vote in opposition.

1/31/07 - At the MVMCA general membership meeting on January 23rd, Deputy Inspector Shanley, Commanding Officer of the 104th Pct, was advised of a community safety issue by some Maspeth residents. This issue concerns the illegal parking of unregistered trucks on Maurice Ave near 53rd Avenue. The Milea Truck Sales Company has been parking new, unregistered trucks on Maurice Ave, 53rd Ave and, at times, inside the white and yellow lines in the middle of Maurice Ave used to separate oncoming traffic. This causes a safety concerns for both area residents and all others who drive and walk through this area. After discussing this issue, President Cimino made a motion "to adopt this issue as a priority and to pursue an appropriate resolution on behalf of the community". A vote was taken and the motion was unanimously approved.

As a follow-up - President Cimino met with Dep Insp Shanley. Nearly 40 summonses have been issued by both the 104 Precinct and the Truck Enforcement Unit. Community Affairs Officer Thomas Bell met with the owner of Milea Truck Sales and was informed that Milea recently secured property in the Bronx and that the trucks would be transported and stored at that location. Officer Bell was assured that the problem would be alleviated over the next 2-3 weeks. The MVMCA will continue to monitor the area.
